the regional severe trauma registry

What is the Regional Severe Trauma Registry?

It is a regional computerized record, collecting data concerning traumatized patients, the care provided and the outcome of the treatments.

Why do we have it?

One of the main aims of the Emilia-Romagna regional health system is to assess the quality of the care given to its patients. It is essential to create registries in order to monitor the care given and the outcomes in the integrated health care system.

Monitor the efficiency of the SIAT becomes easier by collecting, organizing and sharing informations. Using the Registry and its links an healthcare provider can reconstruct the patient's admittance and following care in the hospital up to the discharge and assess the quality of the care given. The database also gives the opportunity to learn from previous experiences and compare data with other centres (benchmarking).
The Registry produces knowhow, is useful for a good network management, can detect where to invest in innovation, or improve organization and technology

How and when was it created?

The Regional Severe Trauma Registry was founded in October 2006, after various spontaneous initiatives from various centres. The representatives from regional Trauma Centres (Bologna, Parma, Cesena) cooperated to create a common dataset and defining a data dictionary able to standardize collected information.

How does it work?

Three SIAT of Emila-Romagna with their Hub and Spoke Centres work together in the database. Every centre has identified a contact for the Registry, every three months the contact has to send data concerning dismissed or deceased patients during that time lapse.
The data is sent, using the FTPS protocol, to the Regional Agency for Health and Social Care.
The Regional Agency for Health and Social Care elaborates the data and returns reports to the hospitals regarding the quality of care provided during those three months. Annual activity reports and specific elaborations of general interest are usually planned together with the centres.

Which patients are registered?

Patients with atleast one of the following characteristics can be enrolled into the database:

  • Injury Severity Score > 15
  • Admittance to ICU
  • Death at arrival in hospital

What information can be obtained from the registry?

The data elaboration permits us to assess:

  • demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with severe trauma
  • intervention time and efficiency
  • clinical outcome on the patients
  • quality of the registry/record (completeness in filling out the registry, validity of data collected)
